This highly enjoyable read was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.I had not come across Mr. Bouman before but I will certainly be keeping an eye out for any future books.
This first volume, the Army of Affliction, introduces us to Lange, his city of Arenes and the world of Khatenia. Lange describes himself as a problem solver for the people who can afford him. He likes to operate under the notice of the authorities and the powerful but he has some good friends in influential places. The whole set up reminds me of John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series but in a fantasy setting. I hope the author does not mind the comparison.
The book begins with Lange taking on a problem which initially he doesn't particularly want but which ultimately leads him on a far reaching and significant quest; on the way he meets and makes powerful enemies and allies, culminating in a fairly epic showdown. I think that Lange's days of operating under the radar are over.
Lange himself is an interesting character, the mildly reluctant and slightly tarnished knight who puts himself in harm's way despite knowing better. He has unusual hobbies and exotic interests which flesh him out far more than many books of this genre. The only mild criticism I have is that bearing in mind his interest in the battle games mentioned throughout the book, there were a few times where he was caught by surprise, where really he should not have been. That is only a little niggle though.
The world of Khatenia is convincing and the whole idea behind the Affliction is well done. The book also hints that we are only scratching the surface so far, with many other interesting cultures and areas to explore.
Add a touch of romance, mysticism and hints that Lange is more than he seems and the whole book left me wanting the sequel. Thankfully, the author's website announced that it should be out in June. In the meantime, as of writing this review, a prequel novella has also just been issued; reading that now.

Many years ago, the Affliction came. It killed off most people and plants and animals, but of those who survived, many had changed. If metal encounters afflicted metal-dust, it will catch it (and be destroyed). If a person or animal gets contaminated with an afflicted live thing, they may die, they may change horribly then die, they may change horribly then be killed and wiped carefully off the streets, or they may change not all that horribly (there are some 'stable afflictions'). The world is a dangerous place where evil can get away with anything.
The main character, once-thief and somewhat handyman Lange, happens into a situation he thinks he can do something about -- first, as a favor to a pretty girl, then following some personal agendas as he is drawn further into the mystery.
The plot, world, and characters in this book all had promise. I forced myself to keep reading almost halfway through, because I really wanted to know how the story turned out, and to learn more about the world. Unfortunately, the way the whole thing is delivered was too painful.
First thing I couldn't stand was the info dumping. Yes, it's a cool world. Yes, there are lots of cool things and races, and I'm certain every person has a detailed backstory. But I don't need to know it all, and I don't want to know it all. (At least, not all at once, and not unless it's relevant.)
The dialog reminded me of those multiple-choice selections on an RPG adventure game -- something like 'what is that?' 'it's a~ I got in~' 'where is~' 'it's~' 'tell me more about[previously mentioned thing of no apparent significance]'. It was used to go over tons and tons of info on the world, species, history, magic, and so forth, which like I said is totally cool, but does not need to be there. So it was just boring.
The writing also lacked a certain.... pizzaz. Short sentences. No exclamation marks. Strange creatures appear and are destroyed like this. Even when reading parts where a lot is happening, I was intensely bored.
The main character might be interesting, but he didn't strike me as very smart (which you expect him to be -- how did he survive all this time?). The sidekicks were gathered a little like you might gather your party in Neverwinter Nights or D&D -- you need a healer, a mage, a warrior, etc. Not that this is in itself a bad thing. I didn't really care for how they interacted. (But this might be because of the dialog-info-dumps and the dull writing.)
I sincerely wish the author might rewrite the book, because I found the setting really interesting, and it could be a super fun book. Lots of promise.

This is the first in a series. It introduces us to Lange, a soldier of fortune and his world. It is a dangerous world, full of monsters, sorcery and conspiracy. There are many layers to the story. The main plot follows him as he starts out on what he thinks will be a simple favor for a woman he likes. This favor quickly changes into an epic quest to find her kidnapped brother, his wife and an artifact stolen from a sorcerer. He agrees to take on some young people on the trip with him thinking it will be an easy trip, but that doesn't happen. They face many creatures, villains and dangers, and then when you think they are finally safe, something else happens. I like that it ends on a positive note setting up for the next book. Which I hope will include the team for this one plus his girlfriend Marlia.
The subplot revolves around him coming to grips with what he wants and helping the students to gaining confidence and work as a team by learning to accept themselves and others.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it left me wanting more. The main character, lange, has depth strength and compassion. I am anxiously awaiting the next book. There are enough questions about lange to leave me wanting yet not piss me off for having to wait for the second book. Keep up the good work JB. thanks

First let me thank J.B. Bouman for giving me a great well written read. I really enjoyed this book. First in the series it's about a hectic and action filled journey made up of self-discoveries. Lange (main character) is sent on a quest through infested jungles. He takes with him a team of students who have to learn to work together in spite of differences and background. Finishes the quest with lots of twist and turns and an ending that in my opinion set up for book 2 but without the dreaded obvious cliff hanger. Well done Bouman and am eagerly waiting next book.
